We love seeing all of the creative designs our sellers come up with for their ViralStyle campaigns! The design process is fun and our sellers have seen an amazing amount of monetary success from their campaigns. How do they do this, you wonder? Well, we went straight to the source to get all the secrets to launching a successful campaign…

Once a month we’re going to interview a top-seller and share the Q + A  with you on our blog. There we’ll dive into their story and ask them to offer some tips + tricks for anyone thinking of creating their own creative campaign. We hope these interviews are insightful, inspiring and get you excited to launch a future campaign with us!

First up: Doug Johnson.

How long have you had an account with ViralStyle?

If I recall correctly, I’ve had my account with ViralStyle since September of 2015 but I wasn’t very active with it until February 2016.

Do you create your own designs or do you use the ViralStyle design tools?

I have several designers that I work closely with. Having a designer (or designers) allows me to focus on more productive areas such as coming up with new design ideas and monitoring my campaigns.

Please describe your creative process.

When it comes to the creative process, I like to first decide on what “niche” I want to design a shirt for. After that I typically go online and research.

Researching could be anything from understanding the niche, to finding funny images (memes) and other shirt ideas regarding that niche for inspiration.

After I believe I’ve come up with several good design ideas, I like to send rough mockups to my designers. They send me back drafts then I approve or disapprove them until they are ready to launch.

What do you think is the key to success when creating a ViralStyle campaign?

The number one thing is understanding your audience. Figure out not only “what they like” but “who they are”. With Facebook Audience Insights you have a plethora of knowledge to help you understand who your target audience is.

Secondly, you have to have a good design. It doesn’t have to be a work of art or a masterpiece but your prospective audience will be able to tell if you haphazardly put it together.

Lastly, never fall in love with a design. You could think you have the greatest design in the world but if people aren’t buying it, it’s not going to do anything for you.

What have you found is the best way to promote your campaign and get exposure for your designs?

Where it stands right now and what I foresee for quite a while longer is utilizing Facebook ads and having highly engaged Facebook pages. There are people out there claiming they can make thousands of sales a month with no ads but I call shenanigans.

How many new designs do you create a month?

It can vary from month to month, but on average I try to come up with 5-10 new designs. I don’t necessarily use every design, but keeping a “design funnel” in place is vital to maintaining a successful business based on apparel or custom printed products.

How much time does it take you to design something new?

This can also vary quite a bit. Some designs have taken me 30 minutes or less to come up with. (Not including the designer’s time to finish it.) But other ideas have taken me hours upon hours of setting it to the side, coming back to it, taking a break from it, etc.

What is your favorite part about being a part of the ViralStyle community?

The opportunity. Without platforms like ViralStyle and others; I wouldn’t have the opportunity to take care of my family like I have or have the peace of mind knowing that my financial destiny is in my hands, not someone else’s.

What advice would you give someone who is looking to start their first creative campaign with ViralStyle?

DO NOT GIVE UP! To this day I have campaigns that fail miserably. But I know through persistence and consistency I will find a winner. You have to keep at it. Find a mentor, pick up a couple of reputable courses, get involved in communities on Facebook and DON’T be afraid to ask questions.

Thank you, Doug!
